After an early stint drumming and singing in Haybaby (Tiny Engines), Zach James began writing and self-producing folk records in his bedroom which quickly evolved into a post-punk band featuring Andrew Bailey (DIIV) on lead guitar. It snarled and simmered around darker textures as James looked to his darkened smile and christened the project Dead Tooth. They gained momentum opening for bands like Hand Habits, The Space Lady and Current Joys.

After recording their second EP entitled Pig Pile, the pandemic disembodied the band as it did so many others. As the world reopened James ambitiously rebuilt the project from the ground up and released the EP. Adding an EWI/Sax player and relinquishing his own live guitar duties for a frontman stage persona the live show grew tremendously in energy. The new crew consisting of Taylor Mitchell, James Duncan, Ginno Tacsiat and John Stanesco was quickly picked up by Rough Trade Publishing and Trash Casual Records. The band went on to win a 16 band, 5 week long "battle of the bands" at Brooklyn's legendary rooftop venue Our Wicked Lady, spurring a trip to SXSW as well as free studio time. In Texas, they then found themselves playing SPIN Magazine’s showcase alongside The Lemonheads, Bass Drum of Death and Pom Pom Squad. SPIN wrote of SXSW, "If there was someone who really broke was Brooklyn’s Dead Tooth.”

After the band's performance on the Stubbs mainstage, a floored Bass Drum Of Death asked them out on the road as direct support in early 2023 to which they excitedly obliged. The band released a few one-off singles and subsequently headlined multiple tours throughout the Eastern US. They are set to release a new EP, produced by Tom Beaujour (Nada Surf, Juliana Hatfield) in 2024 along with extensive touring, including a run of shows back to SXSW where they’re slated as an official artist.
